Hearing aids have become a progressively familiar sight in our culture. You might think that this is the result of more people losing their hearing; however, the reason hearing aids are seen more often is because they have become less expensive and easier to obtain. There are three primary styles of hearing aids to choose from – ITC, CIC, and BTE. The type that someone selects is primarily a result of the severity of hearing loss, although activity level and appearance can also be a factor.

The smallest type of hearing aid available is the CIC model, short for completely in the canal. Anyone that has an acute form of hearing loss will not find great assistance from this type. However, for anyone that has a slight loss of hearing, this model will augment the ear’s existing ability to process sound. CIC’s are made to custom fit in each ear and are placed deep within the ear canal. Because they sit so far inside, these hearing aids are virtually unseen from the outside, but the user must have an ear canal big enough to allow the aid to be completely inserted.

Suitable for individuals suffering from mild to moderate hearing loss, the ITC model, like the CIC, is placed far into the ear canal, but is slightly larger than the CIC. This larger size allows it to accommodate a larger battery and include such additional features as a telephone switch. As a result, many users find this hearing aid option easier to manage. It helps a variety of hearing loss levels by offering a wide range of uses.

The last type of hearing aid is a behind the ear or BTE hearing aid. These are the most common type of hearing aids the people remember seeing on older folks. They sit behind the ear and there are tubes and other things that help bring actual sound to the inside of the ear. Because this is a larger type of hearing aid and is less likely to cause problems, most doctors recommend this style for younger children. Another feature of this type of hearing aid is that it really amplifies sound because it has more electronics in it than the other two smaller models. The BTE’s also come in a wide variety of colors and sizes.

No two hearing aids are the same, thus it is safe to assume that hearing aids cost different amounts of money. How much you pay for a hearing aid will depend on its type, its features, its warranty, what type of sound processor it contains and how much your insurance company will actually cover. It will also depend on if you need one hearing aid or two. If you have to get two hearing aids, you can spend anywhere between $500 and $6000. The internet is a great resource to use to research and find the best hearing aid which will suit your lifestyle, your needs and your budget. Look for companies that offer discounts and rebates from the hearing aid manufacturers and also ask if they offer discounts if you are a senior citizen or are facing a financial hardship.
